Motivation is What Gets You Started, Habit is what keeps you Going…

Recently accompanied my gf to Fitness First Gym. I saw two wonderful taglines in the gym that i felt obliged to share them.
Motivation is What Get You Started, Habit is what keeps you Going…
How often do we find ourselves so eager to start some exercise routine, perhaps after watching some adrenaline pumping movie, or after playing volleyball with friends who have really hot bod, and find our enthusiasm fizzling out just as quickly?
The key is to make your routines a habit. I did not understand this until i experienced for myself. About 2 months ago, i went for reservist. (In Singapore, we are a conscripted army, and guys have to serve 2 years in the army, and after that, about 2 weeks every year for a period of about 10 years). My reservist course schedule comprises of morning jogs for almost everyday. I never jog regularly, let alone jog everyday, and i was finding the going rather tough.
My muscles were sore and tight everyday, and i dread waking up to join the morning exercises. Unfortunately, in reservist, you do not have much choice but to follow the orders, and i grumbled and rumbled along for about 2 weeks.
I feel More Energy Flowing Through Me Than Ever Before!
Then suddenly into my 3rd week (my course is 5 weeks), i found myself breathing more deeply, and easily, and i have more energy in me, than i can remember in recent years. i think to myself, that perhaps it is blessing that i came to reservist, for if i had continued my lifestyle, i might have a heartattack from the unhealty lifestyle i was leading. I begin to look forward to my morning routines.
Interesting at the end of 5 weeks, i found myself wanting to exercise more. However i have a different situation now. While i have the benefit of group exercises to spur myself on during reservist, when i are outside, i are all by myself.
Committing to a Healthly Lifestyle
I dunno what took over me, but i was determined to lead a healthy lifestyle. And i was going to make it a habit. I then began on something that i have never done before. I started jogging every weekday morning, for a distance of 3-4km each time. It was a major challenge to me because i had never succeeded before. I had attempted to jog 3 times a week, only to fail due to lack of determination. I would have to discipline myself beyond anything i had done before to achieve it.
One week, two weeks, three weeks pass by. I was still full of energy and jogging everyday. I couldn’t believe what i was doing! And i was feeling more and more energy flowing through my body each day!
I face my major test
In the fifth week since i began my weekday morning jog, i find myself procrastinating about jogging. i had stayed over my gf’s house the night before, and i had to wake up very early just to get from her house to mine, and prepare my stuff for work. Moreover i was feeling a slight strain in my calf muscles, another excuse for me not to jog.
Something Amazaing Happen!
As i reached home, i found myself unable to control my actions. I was changing up into my running attire once i reach my room, and the next moment, i was out of the door, and jogging!! I had condition myself such that jogging is now a habit, and i find myself subconsciously thinking about it! Amazing!
Energy: The more you give, the more you get back!
I saw the above tagline also at Fitness First. I was initially skeptical. I never feel that by exercising till the point of cramping, i will be able to have more energy in my body. Yet as i look back at the past 2 months of life, i realized that the above is very true.
The more you give, the more you get back. As long as you make committed effort to exercise, you will find yourself, fitter, breathing more easily, getting a better shape, and having more energy in your legs and hands.
Go now, take action, go for a good workout! And make it a habit to exercise. The benefits you will get is immeasurable!
