Anothony Robbins Say “Direct Your Focus Or Be Directed”
June 18, 2008 by MyRoyalWay
I was on my way home, approaching a corner with my motorcycle. I was on this narrow two-lane road, with cars in front of me on both lanes. I was a little tired and tried to keep myself awake by blinking my eyes. Little did i realized that the comfortable distance between me and the cars in front had gradually disappeared. In the next moment when i open my eyes, i found myself at the start of the corner, with one red Mazda 3 only about three m in front of me!
I was a little lost and my first reaction was to stare at the bumper of the red Mazda 3 in disbelief. I braked hard, but i still find myself getting closer to the bumper! My heart was pounding, and i swear i could feel those cold sweat trickling down my spine. With about one meter away i suddenly regained my focus and looked ahead at the adjacent lane, before steering my ride to the adjacent lane. Little did i realize so many things can happen in that split second…
As i regained my composure after that close shave. I thought to myself what would happen if i had continued to stare at the bumper instead of looking away? I believe i would have crashed right into it.
Anthony Robbins and His Experience With Drive-Crash Lessons
Anthony Robbins, world’s no.1 success coach once wrote about his drive-crash lesson in his book “Awaken the Giant Within“.
In his drive-crash lessons, he was taught to focus on where he wants to go, not what you fear. When we skid out of control, we have the tendency to look at the wall. The problem is if you keep focusing on the wall, that’s where you probably going to end up!
Good drivers know that you go where you look because you travel in the direction of your focus. If you focus on where you want to go, and you are able to resist fear and have faith, your action will take you to safety. Conversely you have zero chance if you focus on fear.
Some say what if you going to crash anyway? Well by focusing on where you want to go, we at least increase our chances of survival, and i will certainly like to be on the side of higher surviving percentage anytime.
We Get What We FOCUS On
Isn’t it true that whatever we focus on, we get it? We focused on the unhappy events that happen to us in the day, and we feel upset and cry and become depressed. Similarly when we focused on how we fat we look or how ugly we look as compared to your attractive and lean muscular colleague, we feel depressed. Conversely, we find ourselves grinning from ear to ear when we think about the sweet moments you spent with your love ones a few days ago!
The close shave i had triggered many thoughts in me. In my opinion, some accidents happened simply because the driver was focusing on the exact car bumper, or lamppost that he should be avoiding! If he had directed his focus on where he wants his car to go instead, the accident could have been avoided. It is perhaps too presumptuous to say this, as many other factors are usually involved in an accident, like the weather, surface of road, and adjacent cars, or the existence of drains, lampposts etc.
The Ordinary Boy With Extraordinary Focus
There is this story about a Hunter who has two pupils. One day, to test how much progress these boys have made, he brought them to a hunting ground. He gave instructions for both boys to take aim at the deers in the hunting ground, but they were not to release the arrow until he gave the approval to do so.
He asked the first boy: “What did you see?”. “I see deers!”, he replied meekly, probably a bit surprised to be asked this question. The Hunter shook his head in disappointment and he gave approval to shoot. The first boy missed.
He then asked the second boy the same question. With a low firm voice, he replied “Eye. I see the eye of the deer”. Smiling, the Hunter gave the approval to shoot. And like a homing rocket, the second Boy’s arrow strike the deer with pinpoint accuracy.
It may seem a little far-fetched to relate focus in avoiding accidents to sports. However the power of focus is of utmost importance in sports.
Direct Your Focus In Sports
The truth is that focus applies to everything we do! In sports, the greatest athletes are able to direct their focus in the most testing times. When Tiger Woods was trailing in Final round of the US Open, it would be easy to focus on the pressure, on the atmosphere, on the outstanding play of your Rocco Mediate, but he chose to focus on himself, his play, simply because that’s the only thing he can control.
The same analogy applies to jogging. We all know running long distance is not an easy tasks. Setting a time to push yourself adds to the challenge. We probably have experience at one time or the other, starting our run with great zest only to find fatigue caught up with you halfway through the race.
Whether you gave up or not depends on what you focus on. If your mind could only think of giving up, you will come up with all kinds of excuses to back that up. Like i am feeling a little pain in my joints, or i have to stay fresh for tomorrow’s presentation, or whatever that might support you to give up. However if you focus your thoughts to complete the distance in the required time, you would do totally different things. You could be saying to yourself “i have done this before, i could definitely do it again!” Or “I just need to focus on my one step at a time, thats not too difficult right?”. And naturally you push yourself on.
Positive thoughts can empower us while negative thoughts will limit our potential. Consciously decide to direct your focus and you might never know when it might come in handy.
